Victorian awnings, Poppies, Camden

These two excellent  Victorian awnings, installed at Poppies Fish and Chips in Camden were particularly challenging for us due to the expanse of glass on this frontage we and the lack of obvious fixings. However using imagination and a combination of fixing brackets the task was successfully achieved as can be seen on the images alongside.  The soil and UV resistant fabric selected was a forest green colour and the complex logo and graphics was picked out in a contrasting colour using our bespoke RAGS® branding system.  The awning arms have been powder coated in a durable black finish to contrast with the woodwork and blend in with the shop front frame.  Note how neatly the awnings retract revealing the expanse of glass in uninterrupted form.

Poppie’s is renowned for their authentic fish and chips – and it’s little wonder, with born and bred East-end proprietor, Pat ‘Pop’ Newland, at the helm.  Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of The Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. A combination of ethical awareness, care and precision, mixed with decades of experience, jellied eels, and a hefty dose of East End charm.

There have been a number of famous names associated with Camden over the years and two contrasting names come to mind. The poet Dylan Thomas lived here until his death in 1953. From a different era the equally talented Singer/song writer Amy Winehouse  was strongly associated with Camden Town and  a bronze statue of her was honoured in Stables Market on what would have been the singers 31st birthday on September 14, 2014.
